There are three levels of competition - subsections, sections, and the state tournament. There are rules the production must follow such as: the play must be under 35 minutes, the set must be able to travel and must be able to be set-up within a 10-minute time frame, and the cast and crew size must not exceed 20 students total. Though Edith is sent reeling, she must find a way to move forward somehow. Once the dust storms hit, not only do the Loftins suffer a devastating loss among their own, they also face the loss of their farm. Matriarch Edith already works a night job at the post office to help feed the household of ten, while her husband struggles to run their farm with an injured leg and an oldest son whose behavior grows increasingly erratic.
